“Baby, I’m the Boss of Me: Embracing the Power and Joy of Getting Older,” by Ruth Yunker is a hilarious compilation of personal essays full of spicy fun and attitude about growing older. Memoiristic sentiments from her life’s journey, Yunker regales readers with the circumstances and events that clearly shaped the woman she is today.

The title called to me right away, enticing me from the start. I knew in the very instant I picked up the book was that I was in for a fun ride. Sassy, direct and in-your-face, the message was clear. This would not be the journey of a demure fragile female aging gracefully, but a modern champion facing life head on with gusto and zeal.

Yunker has a writing style that is engaging and genuine.  Putting herself “out there” for all to see, there is no mistaking her clear voice and personality. I feel like I have known her all my life and being in the so-called “mid-life” phase myself, many of the topics directly resonated. One of my personal favorites is the chapter titled White Eyebrows. In it, Yunker talks about the day she discovered her eyebrows had disappeared: “I already knew about disappearing body hair here, there, and everywhere, but flat out on my face with nowhere to hide?” (pg. 42). This is also the chapter where she realizes subtle signs of aging have been presenting themselves for some time, such as being pulled over by a cop that is at least ten years younger than her son, being afraid to put on a bathing suit, looking forward to social security, etc. Great stuff.

I loved reminiscing along the way as my own memories made their way to the surface. “Baby” is not just about memories, however – it’s about pushing through any concerns about aging, embracing life, and using the wisdom gained from the experiences you’ve already had to continue your journey with passion and joyful anticipation of all the experiences yet to come.

“Baby, I’m the Boss of Me: Embracing the Power and Joy of Getting Older” by Ruth Yunker is such a fun book to read to read. I highly recommend it to women of all ages for a straightforward, pragmatic and inspirational outlook on life!
